Been ogling over all the great tropical surf spots on your www.directstartv.com travel channels? Well you don’t have to leave the US to take on some great waves, in fact, you don’t even have to leave the southeast! If you live in this region check out one of our favorite surf spots:
Virginia Beach, VA – it’s a classic beach town in every sense of the word and the great news is, the swell’s in! Virginia Beach has restaurants, a laid back vibe and several dedicated surf stores so it’s a good option for the casual surfer.
Charleston, SC – what better place to take on the waves for a day then head into town for a night out at the bars? Charleston has warm water just about all year round and you can catch decent waves 5 out of 7 days a week.
St. Simon’s Island, GA – Just off the coast of Florida, St. Simons is a great place to relax and learn to surf. Wakeboarding and skimboarding are big here, too, so you can really take on any water sport you’ve got a notion for.

There is nothing like taking your time and waxing the surfboard. You have to feel the angles and the curves; the shape of the board is like the curls and cusps of the sea on a radical day at the beach. This is the anticipation. This is the preparation. It does not matter if you have an old school, classic Hawaiian long board, or a state of the art fiberglass surfboard, the Zen-like feeling is the same. You see the wave. It is a vision of perfection and harmony. You are an extension of the wave. You are Patrick Swayze at the end of the film Point Break.

From the coast of California to Mexico, from the South of France to the mega-waves in Australia, surfing is a lifestyle. Beach culture is laid back and Irie. Surfing is the extension of that lifestyle. Whether you are a beginner, amateur, or have been surfing your entire life, there is no greater feeling than hopping on a board and trying to catch a wave. You cherish a good day at the beach. Although you may not be rocking those pipeline waves, once surfing is in your blood there is no going back.

In 1769, surfing is first mentioned during a voyage of Captain James Cook by a man named Joseph Banks. The art of surfing was developed by the Polynesians just prior to 1769. The Polynesian with the greatest skill was always the chief. He also always had the board made of the best materiel available to the tribe. Around the year 1831 missionaries from Germany and Scotland taught against many of the Polynesian traditions including surfing. After this, surfing was rarely practiced, except by a few Hawaiians.

In 1907 a man by the name of George Freeth was brought to California from Hawaii to introduce surfing at the opening of Huntington Railroad. George Freeth continued to demonstrate his surfing skills all along the west coast. On the East coast a man named James Matthias Jordon Jr introduced surfing with his famous 15 foot redwood board.

In the early part of the 20th century surfing was once again growing in popularity. In Waikiki during the same time surfing was reestablishing itself into a sport. The major areas that surfing begin to grow the biggest was Australia, California, and of course Hawaii. The Beach Boys released their hit Surfing Safari and surfing started to explode and every year has grown and changed into what we see today.
